India vs South Africa: Team India relaxes on eve of 6th ODI as SA toil

JOHANNESBURG: Close to 50 days after arriving here in South Africa for what was expected to be a trial by fire the Indian team enjoyed their first day off from all work whatsoever soaking in the dominating and historic One-day series win over the world s top-ranked team over the last two weeks. In central Johannesburg Team India spent an undisturbed day at their hotel while in Centurion an hour s drive away from here the South African team once again hit the nets for another gruelling session hoping to make up for the series loss by reducing the margin in the sixth and the final One-dayer. We want to end the series on a good note. The coach has a long term vision and a few ideas up his sleeve and he has the opportunity to plan that. That will give us motivation. You still want to have pride in your performance for the country South African batsman Hashim Amla said on the eve of the game. India could possibly use the last One-dayer to try out unused options. South Africa on the other hand could call for changes in the side as a result https://www.npmjs.com/profile of non-performances with coach Ottis Gibson saying after the Port Elizabeth One-dayer that the team management would take a hard look at the defeats. I don t think in One-day cricket we ve been in this position. Maybe 2008 in England when we didn t have a good One-day series (SA were in similar position). We ve played decent cricket in patches but sub-par cricket from what we re used to. Those are the experiences we ll take. The World Cup is not far away. India are probably playing their best team. Whatever experience we get against them we will take forward Amla added. South Africa s bowling remained at full strength throughout the series and yet the hosts despite playing in home conditions did not trouble India in the expected manner. Amla however is of the view that it is South Africa s batting that let them down. Unfortunately with the batting we haven t been able to string enough big scores together whenever we needed to chase. Although we haven t made early inroads we have managed to control the back end of the game. The last 15 overs of their innings hasn t run away from us. The guys have done decently well he said. South Africa Amla added can take some respite knowing three of their more capable batsmen Faf du Plessis AB de Villiers (first three matches) and Quinton de Kock were missing in the series that ended up being a huge blow. That aside he believes South Africa had decent starts and only when India s spinners took charge that they fell apart. The first 10 overs haven t been dramatic. Their spinners have played a role as the highest wicket-takers in the series which is not very common. They ve bowled well. They ve been the difference to be honest. They ve picked up wickets in the middle period and there s no better way to stop the scoring the batsman said
Port Elizabeth: India s first ever one-day international series victory in South Africa has laid a strong platform for the country s hopes of a successful 2019 World Cup campaign captain Virat Kohli said. We are a team that always wants to think of ways we can improve and after this tour we will look be to even stronger with the 2019 World Cup in mind he said after India took a 4-1 lead in the six-match series on Tuesday. Virat Kohli has targeted winning the World Cup in 2019 after winning India s first ODI series in South Africa. Image courtesy: Twitter @BCCI It s a wonderful feeling to have created some history. The guys really got stuck in with the bat and the ball and in the field as well he added after the Port Elizabeth triumph. Success in the series has lifted India above South Africa in the International Cricket Council s one-day rankings and they retained their No 1 status in tests as well despite losing 2-1 to the South Africans last month. For now 4-1 feels amazing. Obviously the players put up some really good cricket to be in this position Kohli added. The last match of the ODI series is in Pretoria on Friday. We want to win 5-1 but there might be a scenario to give a few (other) guys a chance Kohli said with the series won using only 12 of India s 17-man squad. The 2019 World Cup is being hosted by England and Wales where India won their first global title in 1983 before adding a second on home soil in 2011. Right now they are desperately in need of some inspiration if they are to prevent India from running away with the series. On the eve of the fourth One-Day International against India they are clearly depending on two factors to back them up as they gear up for a must-win game. Three down in a six-match series and with three more games to go the hosts will be happy to find the mercurial AB de Villiers back in the team. Along with AB they head into a special game the pink ODI here reminding themselves of the significance of this occasion and the fact that they haven t ever lost a game in that attire on the previous five occasions. On one of those five occasions de Villiers had ended up smashing a 44-ball 149 runs against the West Indies in January 2015 an innings that remains the icing on the cake for South Africa among all other dominating Pink Day performances at home. Most bhakths are semiliterates from families that have started to eat 3 meals a day only recently. They also belong to the cow belt of India. Hence the obsession with cow its dung... PORT ELIZABETH: South African leg-spinner and world s top-ranked one-day international bowler Imran Tahir has complained to the South African team management that he was racially and verbally abused by a fan at the Wanderers cricket stadium during the Pink ODI played against India on Saturday. Cricket South Africa (CSA) and the security personnel at the Wanderers are now investigating the incident where Tahir reported to the stadium security about the said abuse and was then escorted into the stands to identify the individual. Tahir did not play the fourth ODI at the Wanderers and the incident occurred when he was returning from the field after carrying drinks for his teammates. A video posted on a social media website showed Tahir communicating with a handful of spectators soon after the incident but is of poor quality to hear the words that were exchanged. The CSA on Monday said they were aware of the video - posted on social media - and added that Tahir made no physical contact with the perpetrator. Tahir has categorically reported to CSA that the perpetrator was an Indian fan . Team manager Mohammed Moosajee read out a statement on the matter after South Africa s practice session on Monday: My understanding from Imran s perspective is that he was racially and verbally abused by a certain gentleman throughout the match. He reported to stadium security stationed in front of the dressing room and two of the security personnel accompanied him to identify the perpetrator. But obviously when he got up there there was some hostile verbal exchanges. And to neutralise the situation they removed him from the scene and brought him back to the changing room. So that s what we ve been told. There was definitely no exchanges and no children involved in the incident (as has been reported on social media) . Moosajee added that the matter is under investigation and CSA wants to get an idea from the stadium security perspective and their inputs into what happened. The team management is also convinced that there s no wrongdoing on part of Tahir and he hasn t done anything untoward . He had reported it to the stadium security and he was up there just to identify the suspect. The fans that were sitting there it was a cross between both (in verbatim). According to what Imran said it was an Indian fan Moosajee said. CSA along with the International Cricket Council (ICC) takes serious note of any kind of racism and all forms of abuse on the lines of race colour and ethnicity. In line with that CSA can be expected to take very serious note of the incident here. Where cricket is concerned given the nature of the wicket at Port Elizabeth Tahir could well be brought back into the playing eleven for the fifth one-dayer to be played here on Tuesday.
After losing the ODI series 4-1 to India the South Africa cricket team is leaving no stone unturned to win the final match and salvage their pride. Proteas have started preparing for the final ODI by skipping net practice sessions and learning Hindi so that they can understand Dhoni s commands to his bowlers from behind the stumps and get an upper hand. Our players have reached a stage where they feel learning an entirely new language is much easier than differentiating between a flipper and a googly. Dhoni gives advice to Kuldeep and Chahal throughout the match on how to bowl and once we learn Hindi we will be able to decipher Dhoni s commands and score runs against the spinners a South African player revealed their strategy. If we learn their language we can find out what is Dhoni telling his players while setting the field and which Hindi cuss word Kohli is hurling at us he added. When an Indian fan came to know about this plan he said South African players move their feet against spinners in the same way Sunny Deol moves his while dancing. I don t know if learning Hindi will help them in playing the spinners well but they will surely appreciate Dhoni s commentary. In fact BCCI should pay Dhoni more and ask him to commentate from behind the stumps because no one wants to hear the importance of converting ones into twos from Sunil Gavaskar anymore. Initially the South African players were not so eager to learn Hindi for just one ODI but then someone told them that knowledge of Hindi will make them popular in the IPL and help them fetch higher prices. After hearing this the South Africans promised that they will learn to speak better Hindi than Indians.
JOHANNESBURG: Most of South Africa s Test players will sit out from three-match Twenty20 international series against India starting at the Wanderers Stadium on Sunday. JP Duminy who has retired from Test cricket will captain a squad which includes only batsman AB de Villiers of the country s likely first-choice Test players.
